The image dates back to 2017 showing clashes between student activists from
AISA and ABVP at Ramjas College, Delhi.
After several civilians have been killed by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, the situation is tense in the region. In the midst of this, an image of a woman getting caught by another woman in a fight surrounded by police is circulating on social media. The social media post claims to show the atrocities suffered by Muslims in Kashmir at the hands of Indian security forces.
The caption of the article reads “There is genocide in Indian-occupied #Kashmir #boycottindia. (Sic)”
We started our investigation by performing a reverse image search on Google which led to the same image posted in a report by Hindustan times on March 4, 2017. The caption for the images indicates that clashes erupted between activists of the ABVP, AISA and other students on Wednesday. The report says the image was captured by Raj K Raj of Hindustan Times.
According to the report, a conference titled “Culture of Protest” held on February 21, 2017, where Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited to Ramjas College, was canceled because the ABVP requested its cancellation. They claimed that students and teachers launched anti-national slogans. AISA activists opposed this cancellation by ABVP activists. This led to a violent clash between the student bodies of ABVP and AISA.
We also found the viral image on Getty images whose description indicates that this image was captured on 22sd February 2017 in New Delhi. The image shows the outbreak of a clash between activists from ABVP, AISA and other students at the University of Delhi. The image was taken by Raj K Raj of Hindustan Times.
Conclusion-Done Crescendo found that the message mentioned above was False. The viral image on social media shows clashes between ABVP and AISA in Delhi in 2017. The image does not show atrocities against Muslims in Kashmir. The image bears no relation to the current tension in Kashmir.
